The values and the Issues

If you want to know Steve Marks' values, you need only to look to his past. Steve has spent a career bringing people together to advance public policy solutions that better our state and the quality of life of Oregonians. From education, to health care, to care of our environment, public safety, and children, family and senior’s issues, Marks' work has made a difference.

Now he wants your help so he can make a difference for the people of Congressional District 5 in Congress. Not only is he prepared to advance our community issues in Washington D.C., he is prepared to help this nation confront the serious challenges it faces. He sees the principle challenges of a new strong future for America very clearly.

Dealing with an over $9 trillion dollar federal deficit that poses serious financial challenges to our country’s future.
Removing our troops from harm’s way as rapidly as possible, while insuring we maintain a high value on protecting the lives of the Iraqi people who are vulnerable to factional violence – America can do no less than to reduce our obligation with great care, and we can’t divorce our nation from this responsibility simply because President Bush recklessly lead us into this unwarranted and preemptive war.
Providing access to effective health care for every American and finally having the national will to engage in the process of change to make it happen.
Decreasing energy dependence on foreign fossil fuels by investing today in renewable and alternative energy sources that will protect our economy from the danger of losing access to energy sources of the Middle East.
Investing in our nation’s infrastructure and prioritizing reduction of carbon emissions. There is clear connection between what America needs to do to improve our national infrastructure, like choices of investments in transportation systems, and the reduction of carbon emissions that foster global warming. It is time for new priorities in our investments so our economy thrives as we work to meet the global leadership role America must have on this issue.
Refocus America’s national education policy by rejecting the failed and punitive education policy of “No Child Left Behind.” America must reshape our national obligation to the education of students and children. For over twenty years our national commitment to education has waned, and to meet the challenges we face, we must reverse this downward spiral. It is our job to lift the entire continuum of education systems up -- from early childhood, though community college and higher education and on to lifetime educational opportunities – by national action that allow states and local government to invest in learning.
